The Holy Trinity: Exploring CBD, CBG AND CBN

November 15, 2024

While CBD was first to hit the shelves, it is Cannabigerol (CBG), a cannabinoid derived from young cannabis plants, that goes by the nickname “mother of all cannabinoids” because other cannabinoids are derived from cannabigerolic acid (CBGA), the acidic form of CBG.

It’s common knowledge that THC sparks the high, but in recent years other cannabis components have been gaining traction too. CBD (cannabidiol) once an obscure little molecule used to treat epilepsy in children has emerged as a global wellness phenomenon, converting millions of users with its non-intoxicating effects and benefits as a natural anti-inflammatory. This has been followed by two more phytocannabinoids, CBG and CBN, hitting the shelves.

How did we get here? Cannabis consists of more than 600 different molecules, around 140 of which are called cannabinoids because they support the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS)— a system of messengers and receptors that support various bodily systems. With the normalization of cannabis use and more research, it was only a matter of time until new cannabinoids were discovered, named, commercialized and stocked on dispensary shelves. For many, enthusiasm overrode research and scientific data, but for others, safety concerns were top of mind.

Good news: Science has begun to catch up with anecdotal evidence and these three cannabinoids have been safely tested—CBD more than the others but more research is in the works.

CBG binds to both CB1 (nervous system and brain) and CB2 (immune system) receptors in the ECS, where it’s thought to strengthen the function of anandamide, a brain neurotransmitter that enhances pleasure and motivation, regulates appetite and sleep, and alleviates pain. The most recent study represents the first human clinical trial to examine the acute effects of CBG on anxiety, stress and mood: “Results indicate that CBG reduces global feelings of anxiety and stress and that it may enhance memory in the absence of intoxication, impairment or subjective drug effects.”

CBD v. CBN

Cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabinol (CBN) are both non-intoxicating but not the same. While CBD and CBN interact with the same body receptors, they produce different effects.

CBD can be derived from the hemp plant and under the Farm Bill of 2018 is legal (but state laws vary). Animal studies and self-reported benefits of CBD include managing symptoms from anxiety, insomnia and chronic pain. CBD-infused products include lotions and tinctures, gummies and other ingestible as well as beauty products and can be found in grocery stores and gas stations (unregulated) as well as dispensaries (regulated, tested and safer). So it important to shop smart when looking for CBD products and check all CoAs at your local dispensary.

When THC in the cannabis plant ages, it breaks down and forms the less potent cannabinoid called CBN— about 25% as effective as THC, which makes it only slightly psychoactive. Some of the potential uses and benefits observed in studies include: sleep aid (sedative properties); pain relief (in a study of rats, CBN relieved muscle and joint pain); and neuroprotective properties. One 2005 study found that CBN could help delay the onset of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a disease that affects cells in the brain and the spinal cord.

Interesting note: The pain study stated that relief was better when CBD and CBN were used together, perhaps even supercharging the benefits. This is commonly known as the entourage effect, referring to the synergistic effect of different compounds in the cannabis plant. This theory, also sometimes referred to as the symphonic effect, suggests that using compounds in combination can provide more benefits than on their own. As each person and their ECS is unique, it is important to start low and go slow as you find the right combination of CBD, CBN and CBG as well as the right intake method to support your needs. Also, and as always, consult your healthcare provider before you explore.
