Buy Weekly: Vintage Tobacciana

Aug 09 2024

Rachel Berks, Gotham's VP of Creative + Merchandising, takes us through the sourcing and curation of our latest Vintage Tobacciana drop.

One of my forever favorite weekend activities is antiquing. I love exploring sprawling flea markets, dusty antique centers and estate sales, searching for special treasures.

When I ran my own business, Otherwild, I curated a section of vintage home wares called “Lost and Found”. The process thrilled me. I even spent a weekend in Bouckville, NY for their annual antique market that sprawls for miles. My favorite find was a set of candy colored Murano cordial glasses that I still regret parting with.

I do often shop for my own home, and some of my most treasured objects were found over years of hunting: a $3 1970s geometric silkscreen print, a set of green stacking Finnish drinking glasses, a few yards of a bright orange plaid fabric that I had made into pillows. However, the issue with being an obsessive hunter of objects is that you’re always in danger of entering hoarder territory if you aren’t vigilant! So shopping for Gotham, instead of myself, has been a very exciting direction for this particular energy.

Searching for well-designed “cannadjacent” products is a huge part of my job. Some of our customers’ faves fall within this category: Yew Yew wavy bongs, Edie Parker mini grinders, Sackville joint holder keychains and Houseplant ashtrays. So, it’s been a very fun, natural progression for me to source our second Vintage Tobacciana collection.

I won’t reveal all my sources, but this collection comes from markets and antique stores in Paris, Milan, the South of France, Copenhagen, and all across the US. There are some really amazing pieces that I wanted to keep for myself, but again I’m trying to avoid a Grey Gardens vibe in my tiny Brooklyn apartment. Some of my favorites from this collection include a standing red space-age Italian ashtray that I picked up in Milan’s famous Brera antique market, a Globe joint holder, and a mother of pearl clutch that is a purse/makeup bag on one side and a joint holder on the other.

It goes without saying that these objects are one of a kind, and so you should move quickly to grab something you might have your eye on! You can browse the entire Vintage Tobacciana collection on our site or in-person at Gotham through the weekend.
