Can weed actually enhance sex? According to research from multiple peer-reviewed studies, it’s actually been shown that cannabis use is associated with enhanced sexual function, with a Stanford University study finding 20% higher sexual frequency among cannabis users compared to abstainers. Along with that, 70% or higher of participants across multiple studies reported increased sexual satisfaction, orgasm intensity, and orgasm frequency with cannabis, in particular amongst women. Men can also experience increased sexual performance with cannabis, however it’s noted that benefits are dependent upon a moderate dosage, as with heavy use there’s a risk of inhibiting arousal, while for women there are more consistent positive effects across all sexual function domains, and it’s all a result of the endocannabinoid system.
There are two main cannabinoids and four main terpenes that affect sex. The two cannabinoids are THC of course and CBD as well. THC enhances sexual response through stimulating dopamine and enhancing sensation and arousal while CBD enhances sexual response through promoting blood flow and reducing stress. As for terpenes, the four major ones are limonene, beta-caryophyllene, linalool, and myrcene. Limonene is the most important terpene for sex as it both reduces anxiety and has mood-enhancing properties, creating a euphoric relaxation conducive to arousal, with the rest causing similar results to varying degrees.
Now onto the part everybody’s been waiting for: What strains should you get?
Sativa
For our sativa lovers, we recommend Sour Diesel, Green Crack, and Trainwreck to boost energy and arousal.
Hybrid
Last but not least for our hybrid lovers, who want the best of both worlds, we recommend Do-Si-Dos, Girl Scout Cookies, and Mimosa.
Indica
For our indica lovers, we recommend Wedding Cake (our most recommended), Northern Lights, and Granddaddy Purple for enhanced relaxation and sensuality.
As a reminder, dosage is important and effects vary depending on individual metabolism and tolerance, so remember you gain the greatest return from moderation and heavy dosage could have adverse effects such as increased anxiety. Whether you are new to cannabis or experienced with it, keep in mind that you can always take more but you can’t take less, so start with small doses, work your way up from there if you desire, and have a good time.
